INVERSION (EXERCISE 1)

INVERSION

  1. I have never before been asked to accept a bribe.

Never BEFORE HAVE I BEEN ASKED TO ACCEPT A BRIBE.

2. He had hardly left the house when the storm broke.

Hardly HAD HE LEFT THE HOUSE WHEN THE STORM BROKE.

3. The phone started ringing again as soon as he had hung up.

No sooner HAD HE HUNG UP THAN THE PHONE STARTED RINGING AGAIN.

4. This switch must not be touched on any account.

On no ACCOUNT MUST THIS SWITCH BE TOUCHED.

5. He was able to make himself heard only by shouting at the top of his voice.

OnlyBY SHOUTING AT THE TOP OF HIS VOICE WAS HE ABLE TO MAKE HIMSELF HEARD.

6. He didn’t realise that he had lost his keys till he got home.

Not until HE GOT HOME DID HE REALISE HE HAD LOST HIS KEYS.

7. They not only rob you, they smash everything.

Not ONLY DO THEY ROB YOU, THEY ALSO SMASH EVERYTHING.

8. He became so suspicious that he didn’t believe anyone any more.

So SUSPICIOUS DID HE BECOME THAT HE DIDN’T BELIEVE ANYONE ANY MORE.

9. He had no money and didn’t know anyone he could borrow from.

He had no money, nor DID HE KNOW ANYONE HE COULD BORROW FROM.

10. It would be a serious setback, if the talks were to fail.

Were THE TALKS TO FAIL, IT WOULD BE A SERIOUS SETBACK.

11. We seldom have goods returned to us because they are faulty.

Seldom DO WE HAVE GOODS RETURNED TO US BECAUSE THEY ARE FAULTY.

12. Her business was so successful that Marie was able to retire at the age of 50.

So SUUCESSFUL WAS HER BUSINESS THAT MARIE WAS ABLE TO RETIRE AT THE AGE OF 50.

13. Passengers are not permitted to open the doors themselves under any circumstances.

Under no CIRCUMSTANCES ARE PASSENGERS PERMITTED TO OPEN THE OORS THEMSELVES.

14. The door could not be opened without using force.

Only by USING FORCE COULD THE DOOR BE OPENED.

15. They don’t know how lucky they are to live in such a beautiful house.

Little DO THEY KNOW HOW LUCKY THEY ARE TO LIVE IN SUCH A BEAUTIFUL HOUSE.

16. Judith started asking me questions as soon as I had stepped through the door.

No sooner HAD I STEPPED THROUGH THE DOOR THAN JUDITH STARTED ASKING ME QUESTIONS.
