INVERSION REPHRASINGS

1. She remembered the man’s name after he’d walked away.

Only AFTER THE MAN HAD WALKED AWAY DID SHE REMEMBER HIS NAME.

2. They had no idea it was a classical concert.

Little IDEA DID THEY HAVE IT WAS A CLASSICAL CONCERT.

3. There’s no way I can come to the meeting on Friday.

In no way CAN I COME TO THE MEETING ON FRIDAY.

4. They could only keep the children quiet by giving them sweets.

OnlyBY GIVING THE CHILDREN SWEETS, COULD THEY KEEP THEM QUIET.

5. She’s a talented dancer and  a good singer as well.

Not ONLY IS SHE A TALENTED DANCER, BUT ALSO A GOOD SINGER.

6. Don’t show these figures to anyone on any account.

On no ACCOUNT  MUST YOU SHOW THESE FIGURES TO ANYONE.

7. If I had realised how unhappy she was, I wouldn’t have been so abrupt.

Had i REALISED HOW UNHAPPY SHE WAS, I WOULDN’T HAVE BEEN SO ABRUPT.

8. I haven’t seen better service anywhere.

Nowhere HAVE I SEEN BETTER SERVICE.

9. You must not open this door under any circumstances.

UnderNO CIRCUMSTANCES MUST YOU OPEN THIS DOOR,

10. He’d never seen such a professional performance before.

Never BEFORE HAD HE SEEN SUCH A PROFESSIONAL PERFORMANCE.

11. As soon as he had eaten, he jumped up and began to dance.

No SOONER HAD HE EATEN THAN HE JUMPED UP AND BEGAN TO DANCE.

12. She wasn’t pretty; she didn’t have a nice personality either.

She wasn’t prett, NEITHER DID SHE HAVE A NICE PERSONALITY.

13. You will finish this work if you start now.

Only if YOU START NOW, WILL YOU FINISH THIS WORK.

14. The papers blew away.

AwayBLEW THE PAPERS.

15. They didn’t see the sign until it was too late.

Not until it was TOO LATE DID THEY SEE THE SIGN.

16. It was only after he’d left the house that he realised he’d forgotten his key.

Only after HE HAD LEFT THE HOUSE DID HE REALISE HE HAD FORGOTTEN HIS KEY.

17. If I were you, I’d just ignore her cruel remarks.

WereI YOU, I’D JUST IGNORE HER CRUEL REMARKS.

18. They didn’t arrive on time; they didn’t apologise either.

They didn’t arrive on time; NEITHER / NOR DID THEY APOLOGISE.

19. He laughed so much that tears rolled down his cheeks.

So much DID HE LAUGH THAT TEARS ROLLED DOWN HIS CHEEKS.

20. Peter was not only a well known detective but he also became a successful writer as well.

Not only WAS PETER A WELL-KNOWN DETECTIVE, BUT HE ALSO BECAME A SUCCESSFUL WRITER.

21. Parliament had never made such dramatic changes to the legal system before.

Never BEFORE HAD PARLIAMENT MADE SUCH DRAMATIC CHANGES TO THE LEGAL SYSTEM.

22. It was only when the intruders had forced their way into the house that they came across the huge Alsatian dog.

Only WHEN THE INTRUDERS HAD FORCED THEIR WAY INTO THE HOUSE DID THEY COME ACROSS THE HUGE ALSATIAN DOG.

23. It was only by mounting a full-scale investigation that the police discovered who the murderer was.

Only BY MOUNTING A FULL-SCALE INVESTIGATION DID THE POLICE DISCOVER WHO THE MURDERER WAS.

24. Organisations should no longer expect people to work unsociable hours without being paid overtime.

No longer SHOULD ORGANISATIONS EXPECT PEOPLE TO WORK UNSOCIABLE HOURS WITHOUT BEING PAID OVERTIME.

25. Heads of State seldom seem to learn any lessons from history.

Seldom DO HEADS OF STATE SEEM TO LEARN ANY LESSONS FROM HISTORY.
