TRANSLATION UNIT 7 (KEY)

John siempre había sido un estudiante conflictivo, una persona poco accesible, violenta y cruel que la emprendía siempre con los más débiles.

John had always been a dusruptive student, an anapproachable person, violent and cruel who took it out on the weakest people.

Con el paso de los años, su comportamiento no mejoró, sino todo lo contrario. Su veta despiadada fue de mal en peor.

As years went by, his behaviour did not improve at all, quite the opposite. His ruthless streak went from bad to worse.

Nunca logró un puesto de trabajo fijo. No era capaz de seguir las directrices de las empresas para las que trabajaba, de admitir que alguien le pudiera decir qué debía hacer. Se enemistaba con todo el mundo.

He never got a steady job / Never did he get a steady job. He was unable to follow / to adhere to the guidelines issued / laid down  by the companies he was working for, unable to admit that someone could tell him what he should be doing. He fell out with everybody.

Sus amigos eran camellos, ladrones, atracadores, asesinos en potencia. Su hogar, la calle, los barrios pobres de las afueras.

His friends were drug pushers, thieves, robbers / muggers, potential murderers. His home, the streets, the poor neighbourhoods on the outskirts.

Le arrestaron varias veces. La última fue la peor. Había atacado a una mujer de edad en la calle. Pretendía robarle la cartera. La pobre tropezó, cayéndose y dándose un golpe en la cabeza. Murió en el acto.

He was arrested several times. The last one was the worst. He had mugged an elderly lady in the street. He intended to / He was trying to steal her wallet. The poor woman / The poor old thing stumbled, fell and banged her head. She died straightaway /immediately.

Le acusaron de dos delitos, de atraco y de homicidio involuntario. Ya había tenido varias condenas por robos y atracos y, esta vez,  el jurado no se mostró en absoluto clemente.

He was accused of / He was charged with two crimes: mugging and manslaughter. He had already been sentenced for thefts and muggings / hold-ups, and this time, the jury was not lenient at all.

Emitió un veredicto de culpabilidad y le condenaron a diez años de cárcel.

They returned a guilty verdict and sentenced him to ten years’ imprisonment.
