UNIT 2 A

 

To enhance: to increase or further improve the good quality, value or status of sby/sthg. Aumentar, mejorar, realzar.

To cease: (formal) to stop happening or existing; to stop sthg from happening or existing.

To enable: to make it possible for sby to do sthg. To make it possible for sthg to happen or exist by creating the necessary conditions.

To commit sthg TO memory: to learn sthg well enough to remember it exactly.

To struggle: to try very hard to do sthg when it is difficult or when there are a lot of problem.

To hit: to reach a particular level.

Compound: (chemistry) a substance formed by a chemical reaction of two or more elements in fixed amounts relative to each other.

Within: before a particular period of time has passed; during a particular period of time. Inside the range or limits of sthg not further than a particular distance from sthg.

Vault: a room with thick walls and a strong door, especially in a bank, used for keeping valuable things safe.

To retrieve: (formal) to bring or get sthg back, especially from a place where it should not be

To put up with: to accept sby/sthg that is annoying, unpleasant, etc. without complaining. To tolerate.

To master: to learn or understand sthg completely: To control.

To show off: (informal, disapproving) to try to impress others by talking about your abilities, possessions, etc.

To sail through: to pass an exam, a test, etc. without any difficulty

In a row: if sthg happens several times in a row, it happens in exactly the same way each time, and nothing different happens in the time between. if sthg happens for several days, etc. in a row, it happens on each of those days.

Let alone: used after a statement to emphasize that because the first thing is not true or possible, the next thing cannot be true or possible either. Para qué hablar…, y mucho menos.

Supple: able to bend and move parts of your body easily into different positions. Soft and able to bend easily without cracking.

To devise: to invent sthg new or a new way of doing sthg. To think up.

To boost: to make sthg increase, or become better or more successful.

Side-effect: an extra and usually bad effect that a drug has on you, as well as curing illness or pain.

Performance: how well or badly you do sthg; how well or badly sthg Works.

Fringe: [sing.] (usually the fringe) groups of people, events and activities that are not part of the main group or activity.

Cognition: (psychology) the process by which knowledge and understanding is developed in the mind.

Wakefulness: (of a period at night) spent with little or no sleep.

To portray: to show sby/sthg in a picture; to describe sby/sthg in a piece of writing.

To usher: to take or show sby where they should go.

To embrace: (formal) to put your arms around sby as a sign of love or friendship. To accept an idea, a proposal, a set of beliefs, etc., especially when it is done with enthusiasm.

Peak: [usually sing.] the point when sby/sthg is best, most successful, strongest, etc.

Dramatic: (of a change, an event, etc.) sudden, very great and often surprising. Dramatically: adverb.

To point out: to mention sthg in order to give sby information about it or make them notice it.

Responsible FOR

Dehydrated: having lost too much water from your body.

To release: to set free.

Adverse: negative and unpleasant; not likely to produce a good result. Adversely: adverb.

To store: to put sthg somewhere and keep it there to use later. to keep information or facts in a computer or in your brain.

To slow down: to go or to make sthg/sby go at a slower speed or be less active.

Foggy: not clear.

  1. Reading is good “Passive” way of improving vocabulary, but when you are resorting to making lists, that is “Active” method. Problem with active method of learning words is that it is cumbersome and boring, and you doing retain and unless you use it in writing sentences to apply the word, very little chance is that you increase your lexical size.
