EXPRESSING PURPOSE

 

  1. FOR can express:
  • the function of sth.
  • the reason why we do sth.
  • It can also have a passive meaning.
  1. The reason why he went to prison was that he mugged an elderly lady in the street.
  2. You hold cut flowers in a vase.
  3. These pictures are not to be sold.
  4. You write on a blackboard with a piece of chalk.
  5. John didn’t do his homework. He was punished.
  6. You sharpen pencils with a pencil sharpener.
  7. You need clothes pegs if you want to hang your washing out.

 

  1. TO / IN ORDER TO / SO AS TO express purpose and answer the questionwhy something is done.

IN ORDER TO and SO AS TO are more emphatic and formal and are more common before stative verbs like: be, have, know, appear, seem, understand, etc.

Before a negative infinitive, we usually use IN ORDER NOT TO, SO AS NOT TO, and NOT “NOT TO.

  1. I am going to Madrid because I want to visit my family.
  2. I am looking up this word because I want to understand its meaning.
  3. Jane does not work outside the home because she wants to be with her family.
  4. John phoned me because he wanted to invite me to dinner.
  5. I didn’t phone you yesterday evening because I didn’t want to disturb you.
  6. He is studying hard because he doesn’t want to fail his exams.
  7. He opened the window. He wanted to let  fresh air in.
  8. María is going to English classes because she wants to learn a foreign language.
  9. She always wakes up early because she never wants to be late for work.
  10. He tiptoed into the room because he didn’t want to wake up the baby.

 

 

  1. SO THAT also expresses purpose, but it is usually followed by a subject and a modal verb (will, can, may, would, could, etc.).

 

1. I gave them my keys because I wanted them to be able to get into the house.

2. He asked for a visa because he wanted to be able to stay in the US for three months.

3. John’s mother gave him 100€ because he would need them to pay for his school fees.

4. We are leaving early because we want to get to Madrid before the rush hour.

5. He entered the house very quietly because he didn’t want his parents to know how late it was.

6. She is studying very hard because she wants to be a doctor.

7. We stayed out all night because we wanted to see the meteor storm.

8. We’ll go to Madrid by car because we need to take a lot of luggage.

9. She was feeling very sad, so he gave her a present.

10. If you want to pass your exams you must study harder.
